Melbourne Victory goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas is comfortable as first-choice goalkeeper and maintains he always knew he would get something great out of football.
Thomas played a starring role in Victory's 2015 grand final triumph over Sydney FC in the 3-0 drubbing, standing in for the first-choice goalkeeper Nathan Coe who was ruled out with a back injury.
He watched the majority of last season from the stands after the departure of Coe and the signing of experienced goalkeeper Danny Vukovic.
He got his shot in March after Victory suffered a 5-0 defeat to Brisbane Roar.
Vukovic, who was dubbed as “a true professional” by captain Carl Valeri, played his final game for the Victory in an AFC Asian Champions League (ACL) game which finished goalless against Suwon Bluewing.
He then signed for Sydney FC and returned home to be with his sick son who was in need of a liver transplant.

Thomas has since accepted the responsibility of being Victory’s No.1 goalkeeper and said there was no added pressure after the signing of second-choice goalkeeper Alastair Bray.
“I wouldn’t have to say if my dream has come true, because I always had ambitions of making a living out of the game,” Thomas said.
“For me I believe it’s one of the steps and hopefully I can really cement the spot here and if I can really find my game and pick at everything we’ll see how far it can take me.
“I don’t tend to talk too much outside the field about what’s going on. The confidence comes from whether you’ve done the work or not and that’s where mine came out coming in last season because I did everything I could to be ready for the opportunity.
“I’m controlling what I can, I’m coming in and doing my work every day then I’ll accept whatever happens because I know I put all I can into it, also with Vuka, it’s a special thing with the goalkeepers, there’s that respect there because you work together so close every day.
“(Bray) been a great asset to the team and we go out, have good laugh but at the same time we know when to switch on and start working so he’s been a great addition to the squad.”
Victory travel to Wellington to take on the Phoenix who they comprehensively defeated 6-1 just a fortnight ago.
Thomas sent his well wishes to the victims of the New Zealand earthquakes admitting his brother was in the country when it occurred.
Thomas said they would carry on with training and will try to build on the 3-0 win over Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday where he kept his first clean sheet of the season.
The 24-year-old spoke glowingly of German loanee Maxi Beister, who scored on his long awaited debut off the bench against the Wanderers, which led to Thomas running half the field to celebrate.

“I think he was really excited maybe partly excited by that atmosphere there, I don’t think he expected that with Australian football,” he said.
“He came in and said ‘wow, it’s really loud’, so it’s a great moment for him, a big impact on him in making him feel at home at the club.
“From a personal experience when you come into a football team, the best way to feel involved in the team is if you have an impact on game day.
“I think for him coming on and scoring is the best thing that could happen for the club to make him feel welcome so that’s why I ran the whole way up the field, I was pretty tired coming back but I thought it was important to share a moment with him.”
