SOCCEROO Tim Cahill was welcomed by French great Thierry Henry at the Aussie star's first training session with his new MLS club New York Red Bulls today.
Cahill visited the team’s facility at Montclair State University earlier today and had a light training session alongside the former Arsenal legend.
The New York Red Bulls announced today that it has signed midfielder Cahill as a Designated Player from Premiership club Everton.
Cahill will join the Red Bulls’ roster pending receipt of his P-1 visa and International Transfer Certificate (ITC).
Per MLS and club regulations, specific terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The club will officially introduce Cahill to members of the media in a press conference on Monday at Red Bull Arena.
And if reports from Spain are correct, Red Bulls could also put in an offer for Brazilian superstar Kaka.
The striker appears is on the fringe at Real Madrid who may put in an offer for Spurs' want-away playmaker Luka Modric.
Kaka could be tempted away from the Bernabeau though his former club AC Milan are also said to be keen on taking Kaka back.
As for Cahill, FourFourTwo's EPL and Euro leagues preview issue (out August 8) will feature a special on Cahill reflecting on his eight seasons at Everton.
Cahill becomes the third designated player in New York alongside captain Thierry Henry and former Barcelona defender Rafael Marquez and links up with Hans Backe's men atop of the Eastern Conference.
The Red Bulls are still searching for their first MLS title and the 32-year-old is keen to end that drought.
"I am very happy to start a new chapter of my career with the New York Red Bulls," he told the club's official website.
"As we have seen over the past few years, MLS has developed into a very competitive league with many talented players.
"I am impressed with what the Red Bulls are trying to accomplish in MLS and within American soccer and I am looking forward to this new challenge.
"I will do everything I can to help bring New York its first MLS Cup."
Cahill made the move to Goodison Park from Millwall before the start of the 2004/05 season for £1.5 million , having made 217 appearances for the London club including 2004's FA Cup final against Manchester United.
In his first season under David Moyes he was Everton's top goal scorer and was Player of the Season and Player's Player of the Season.
While in 2006 he was one of 50 nominees for the prestigious Ballon D'Or award, becoming the first Everton player to be nominated in 18 years.
But he could only manage three goals during last season's campaign and leaves Goodison Park having played a total of 226 English Premier League games for Everton.
"I also want to thank everyone at Everton, from the club to tremendous supporters," the 2009 FA Cup runner-up said.
"It has been a privilege to be an Everton player for the past eight years and it was a very difficult decision to leave."
His decision to swap England for the United States was met by great enthusiasm by New York Red Bulls general manager and sporting director Erik Soler.
"We are absolutely thrilled to bring in a player of Tim's calibre," he said.
"He is the technical, physical presence we have been looking to add in our team and he brings a wealth of experience to our club having played in some of the highest levels of international soccer.
"Tim is a proven leader both on and off the field and we believe that he can help us immediately in our quest to win the MLS Cup this season."
