Torres has enjoyed Melbourne for the past three days, visiting the local zoo, getting involved with fans before taking part in the 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the International Champions Cup (ICC).

The Spaniard now looks forward to travelling to Geelong to take on A-League club Melbourne Victory on Sunday, a game which would be Atletico’s third of the pre-season.

Recent reports have suggested Torres would be interested in playing Down Under in the future and the 32-year-old elaborated further on the issue saying he still wants to remain in his home city.

“You never know, I say in the future you don’t what is going to happen tomorrow, so imagine in a few years’ time,” Torres said.

“My target is to play many more years at Atletico and hopefully I can finish my career here at the highest level, but you never know what will happen.

“My idea is to play a good season, to score many goals, win trophies and sign a new contract again. To be honest, I want to think about the future no more later than one year at a time.

“I’m 32, I’m feeling strong and I feel I have more years to play at the highest level, this is the club I want to play at.”

Torres is a player who has achieved almost every major accolade there is to claim in the game, a world cup, two European Championships and a UEFA Champions League trophy.

But despite plans to stay some years in Spain, the striker spoke of the quality of Australian football and Atletico’s commitment to contribute to the game during their time in Melbourne.

“We saw the draw they (Victory) had against Juventus, for them it was a big game to play against few of the top teams in Europe and they take it very seriously,” he said.

“We have to approach the game the same way, we want to get a good result. I think (Australian football) it’s getting better and growing. Football around the world is getting better.

“Around the continents, football is getting bigger and the fans they want to watch it more and more. Hopefully, we can help in a certain way to develop the football in Australia.

“It’s been great always, when I go with my teams outside my country, it’s great to feel the love of the fans and we feel very welcome.

“Hopefully we can give them some good matches on the pitch and make them feel proud of the team.”

With the game in regional Victoria having no significant bearing on either team, Torres was still adamant pre-season games still had a place in football and it was important to improve match fitness before La Liga begins in a months’ time.

Torres also believed they needed to bring the form they produced in their win against Tottenham when they travel across Victoria.

 “We have to approach every game like last night with an aim to win, for us the more important thing is to win the game,” he said.

“We’re really thinking winning is able to be transferred from training, so we can train winning. That’s the way we approach this tournament.

“We had a very difficult first 20 minutes against Tottenham. It’s only the second game we play this pre-season, so the legs are still on their way to work, but we take the game very seriously tomorrow.”
