GOLD Coast United have sealed top spot on the National Youth League ladder after two impressive goals in each half gave them a 2-1 win over Newcastle Jets at Southport Tigers on Saturday.
A 35-yard screamer from Chris Broadfoot and Golgol Mebrahtu's powerful drive in the second period were enough for United to take all three points on a bright and windy day on the Gold Coast.
Gold Coast are now clear on top of the NYL with nine points and with a game in hand over their nearest competitors, a good position with their next three matches away from their Southport fortress.
The first half belonged to the hosts and local boy Broadfoot put his stamp on the game in the first few minutes after midfield dynamo Joshua Brillante won possession and dished it out to the Gold Coast Premier League veteran, who found himself unmarked and in acres of space.
From 35 yards he looked up, spotted Newcastle goalkeeper Robbie Kolak off his line and curled his spectacular effort home, dipping neatly into the top left hand corner.
Broadfoot was influential in the first half and was involved with most of Gold Coast's attacking moves, displaying good touch and a dazzling array of skill.
United should have made it 2-0 after Broadfoot danced his way past three Jets defenders and into point-blank range before being taken down by Jon Griffiths, giving referee Adam Kersey no choice but to point straight to the spot.
Striker Andrew Barisic took the responsibility of the 31st minute penalty that followed but ballooned it well over the crossbar, keeping the door open for a Newcastle comeback.
The second half started flat and remained so after Broadfoot was substituted in the 56th minute - until Newcastle's Steven Veleski brought the game back to life, levelling the scores after a stunning run across half the pitch.
The Jets striker found himself with the ball at the halfway line and began a dashing run along the length of the right flank, making his way into the box past United's defence and slamming his shot into the left upright, rebounding into the back of the net to make it 1-1.
But just moments later Gold Coast grabbed the lead once more after substitute Golgol Mebrahtu's low drive from just inside the box evaded the packed defence in the Newcastle box and snuck into the bottom-right hand corner.
Mebrahtu provided the spark Gold Coast was lacking at the start of the half and nearly had a brace moments later when his free kick at the edge of the area dipped mischievously late, but too late to extend his side's lead.
Both sides were visibly tiring as the game reached its conclusion but United hung on to increase their winning streak to three matches in a row.
