It was a rather scrappy affair as both sides played physically and with immense determination to grip the match by the scruff of the neck. France were in control for most of the match thanks to Ngolo Kante but Uruguay had some chances early on.

Raphael Varane's aerial prowess earned France the lead in the first half, getting on the end of Antoine Griezmann's clever set-piece on the edge of the box.

The Atletico Madrid forward made it two just after the hour mark but was assisted by a blunder by Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, who fumbled Griezmann's shot into his own net.

Uruguay couldn't replicate their 2010 heroics and La Celeste have been knocked out in the quarter-finals for the second time in their history.

URUGUAY

Fernando Muslera - 4

Had his heart in his mouth, overestimating his ball skills as he was dispossessed by Griezmann in the box, luckily it went out for a goal kick. Fumbled Griezmann's shot which made it 2-0 to France, the stuff of nightmares cost Uruguay the match.

Martin Caceres - 5.5

Brilliant chase in the fifth minute, going the distance to win throw-ins deep into enemy territory. Could have snatched an equaliser if it weren't for the cat-like reflexes of Hugo Lloris.

Jose Giminez - 4

Giminez was caught off guard on many occasions as deliveries into the box away from his back post weren't dealt with by his defensive partners and he had to deal with more pressure.

Diego Godin - 5

A sloppy game with some misplaced passes.France's crosses often found a way to trickle through to the back post, usually bouncing in the penalty area.

Diego Laxalt - 5

Very hungry getting forward as he put pressure on Benjamin Pavard, almost setting up a half chance inside five minutes. Jockeyed Mbappe confidently and prevented him threatening at the by-line or making inroads into the box.

Nahitan Nandez - 4.5

Terrific early pressure, winning the ball high up the pitch and putting Kante under pressure. The Chelsea midfielder got the better of him though as Nandez struggled to find any space to make an impact.

Lucas Torreira - 5

Involved in some special and swift build up play for Uruguay in the first half but La Celeste were missing the key link of Cavani to make their forays forward count. Pogba drew out Torreira as Tolisso picked the ball up in his zone and set up Griezmann for the second goal.

Matias Vecino - 4

Kante hounded and pressured Vecino out of the game going forward but his defensive work in the pocket next to Laxalt was commendable. Poor defending from the free-kick as Griezmann's stutter put him off and he lost Varane in the box.

Rodrigo Bentancur - 4.5

Gave away the free-kick with a nasty tackle on Clorentin Tolisso which lead to France's equaliser. Just to add insult to injury he received his second yellow card of the tournament.

Christian Stuani - 3.5

His first chance from the match came from a header on the end of Torreira's corner. It bounced into the ground and Lloris came to clear the danger.

Luis Suarez - 5

Found his spaces on the left and right flanks as he did against Portugal but without Cavani on the end of his passes and movements he wasn't half as effective.

Subs

Cristian Rodriguez - 4

Brought on for Rodrigo Bentancur who had been booked.

Maximiliano Gomez - 4

Subbed on with 30 minutes to go for Stuani as Uruguay looked for goals.

Jonothan Urretaviscaya - N/A

Subbed on for Bentancur with 17 minutes left in the match.

Nabil Fekir - N/A

FRANCE

Hugo Lloris - 6.5

Put his body on the line to dive and punch the danger away when Torreira's corner found the head of Stuani. A superhuman reaction save in the bottom left corner denied Caceres the chance for an equaliser.

Benjamin Pavard - 6

Got forward with surprisingly little pressure. The youngster threatened with his deliveries into the box.

Raphael Varane - 7

Stuani didn't prove as much a threat as the towering Cavani would have with Varane comfortably winning the aerial battle. A great header from the set-piece opened the scoring for France.

Samuel Umtiti - 5.5

Prone to a few shaky moments in possession as we've seen this tournament and with Suarez lurking he was always looking behind his left shoulder. Not a confident performance by his standards and will certainly need to pick it up in the semi-final.

Lucas Hernandez - 6

Found some trouble dealing with Laxalt in the opening minutes while his deliveries weren't up to scratch.

Paul Pogba - 6.5

Pogba covered the ground well, screening in front of France's defense. However, going forward only a number of 'row Z' attempts came from the Manchester United midfielder.

Clorentin Tolisso - 6.5

Glided across the middle third, picking out passes to keep possession as well as being able to use his body to win headers in midfield. An adequate replacement for the impressive Blaise Matuidi who excelled last time out but missed this match due to suspension.

Ngolo Kante - 7

A shaky first few moments as he was dispossessed by Nandez and France were on the back foot. France  impressively controlled the match thanks to his efforts, closing down Uruguay's frantic attacks.

Antoine Griezman - 7

A goal and an assist for the Madrid man. A clever stutter on the free-kick delivery allowed Varane to find the space to get rid of his defender and head home the opener. A powerful swerving shot was fumbled by Muslera as he made it 2-0 to France.

Olivier Giroud - 6

Showed great strength and awareness to hold up the play and open up Uruguay on the edge of the penalty area. Did his bit to set up Mbappe for a clear-cut chance but the youngster couldn't take it.

Kylian Mbappe - 6.5

It wasn't another star studded night for the youngster as he couldn't find the wide open spaces in Uruguay's midfield as he did against Portugal. Had five successful take-ons in the first 20 minutes of the match but should have buried a chance in the 15th minute with a free header inside the box.

Steven Nzonzi - N/A

Brought on with 12 minutes to go for Tolisso

Ousmane Dembele - N/A
