It was a rather scrappy affair as both sides played physically and with immense determination to grip the match by the scruff of the neck. France were in control for most of the match thanks to Ngolo Kante but Uruguay had some chances early on.

Raphael Varane's aerial prowess earned France the lead in the first half, getting on the end of Antoine Griezmann's clever set-piece on the edge of the box.

The Atletico Madrid forward made it two just after the hour mark but was assisted by a blunder by Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, who fumbled Griezmann's shot into his own net.

Uruguay couldn't replicate their 2010 heroics and La Celeste have been knocked out in the quarter-finals for the second time in their history.

URUGUAY

Fernando Muslera - 4

Had his heart in his mouth, overestimating his ball skills as he was dispossessed by Griezmann in the box, luckily it went out for a goal kick. Fumbled Griezmann's shot which made it 2-0 to France, the stuff of nightmares cost Uruguay the match.

Martin Caceres - 5.5

Brilliant chase in the fifth minute, going the distance to win throw-ins deep into enemy territory. Could have snatched an equaliser if it weren't for the cat-like reflexes of Hugo Lloris.

Jose Giminez - 4

Giminez was caught off guard on many occasions as deliveries into the box away from his back post weren't dealt with by his defensive partners and he had to deal with more pressure.

Diego Godin - 5

A sloppy game with some misplaced passes.France's crosses often found a way to trickle through to the back post, usually bouncing in the penalty area.

Diego Laxalt - 5

Very hungry getting forward as he put pressure on Benjamin Pavard, almost setting up a half chance inside five minutes. Jockeyed Mbappe confidently and prevented him threatening at the by-line or making inroads into the box.
