DEFENDERS Michael Valkanis and Angelo Costanzo have signed new contracts with Adelaide United which will see them at the club for another season.
delaide United Coach Aurelio Vidmar made the announcement and says it is a positive to have two of his most seasoned defenders and on field leaders staying on for another year.
“We’re very pleased to announce the contract extensions of Michael Valkanis and Angelo Costanzo for the following season,” Vidmar said.
“I think it is extremely important that we have our strongest team vying for a spot every week. We had that for about the first half of last season and the results showed that as we were at the top of the table.”
Valkanis, a member of Adelaide United’s inaugural squad back in 2003, was appointed captain prior to the 2007/08 season, leading The Reds to the 2007 Pre-Season Cup Championship before suffering a season ending knee injury in Round 3.
Having worked hard during his rehabilitation, the 33 year old is determined to play on and help United get back among the leading clubs in the A-League.
“The knee is coming along really well and that’s why I decided to go on for another season,” Valkanis said.
“It makes you think about a lot of things while you’re out injured and it’s hard being out for so long but the disappointment of not making the finals last season has motivated me a whole lot more to do my best to help the team make the finals and go that one step further.”
Of all United players, only the retiring Richie Alagich has played more games for the club than Valkanis, who is eyeing the start of the 2008 Pre-Season Cup as his likely return to the playing field.
Costanzo, who turns 32 in May, has also worn the captain’s armband for United. The former Socceroo and popular pony tailed crowd favourite was the interim captain during the Reds’ AFC Champions League 2007 campaign.
Having marshalled United’s defence in his 15 appearances for United in this season, Costanzo is delighted to be staying with the club.
“It’s great to extend my relationship with a fantastic club for another season. Adelaide United is a club I enjoy playing for and hopefully we can improve on last season and win a grand final in 2008/09,” Costanzo said.
With his future secured for another season, Costanzo can now look forward to the AFC Champions League 2008, which kicks off in a month, as Adelaide United faces Korean champions the Pohang Steelers in Match Day 1 of the prestigious competition on March 12.
