MELBOURNE Victory have risked losing captain Kevin Muscat for the first week of the A-League finals by appealling his two match suspension just before today's midday deadline.
With only two matches left in the home-and-away season, a potentially longer ban for Muscat would see him miss some playoffs action.
But the club has taken the gamble in order to have Muscat available for the crucial last-round clash against Sydney FC.
The appeal will be heard on Wednesday night in Sydney.
Muscat was deemed by the A-League match review panel to have committed 'serious foul play' following his clash with Gold Coast captain Jason Culina during Friday night's 1-0 loss at Skilled Park.
If Muscat's current two-match ban stands, he will miss the last two home-and-away games against North Queensland this Friday night at Etihad Stadium and the last-round trip to Sydney.
But Victory, who will contest both the guilty verdict and the severity of the original suspension, are hoping that Muscat's ban could be reduced to one match.
That would then leave the Victory captain free for the last-round blockbuster against Sydney, which is likely to decide which of Sydney or Melbourne finishes in the top two alongside Gold Coast.
A top-two finish is vital to Victory's hopes of becoming the first A-League team to win back-to-back Championships as only the top two teams at the end of the home-and-away season get the opportunity to host the grand final.
