MELBOURNE Victory are favourites to retain their A-League crown with bookmakers doubting Gold Coast United's ability to stake a claim in their debut campaign.
Ernie Merrick's men are priced at $3.75 to secure their third Grand Final Championship while Frank Farina's Brisbane Roar are second favourites with TAB Sportsbet offering $4.50 on them for their first title.
Sydney FC have earned praise for their pre-season showings under new boss Vitezslav Lavicka and the Moore Park men, yet to coincide a goal in their warm-up fixtures, are third favourites for top spot, currently on offer at $6.50.
Gold Coast United have made plenty of noise since their formation and chairman Clive Palmer believes they can go through their first season without losing a match. But despite high profile captures such as Socceroo star Jason Culina, they are only fourth favourites at present with $7.50 on offer.
The outlook is even gloomier for fellow new boys North Queensland Fury. Robbie Fowler's presence is designed to ensure plenty of goals for the Townsville outfit but they are only seventh equal in line for the title in the bookies' eyes. They are priced at $15 to secure the championship, behind Adelaide and Mariners.
Perth Glory have also been busy in the transfer market during the off-season with Socceroos duo Mile Sterjovski and Jacob Burns among their captures. Despite a sense of renewed optimism around Members Equity Stadium, Dave Mitchell's men are priced at $15 for top spot.
Newcastle Jets picked up the wooden spoon last season and the odds don't point to them swapping bottom spot for the top this year. They are $21 for the championship along with Wellington Phoenix.
As for the unwanted honour of the wooden spoon, currently held by the Jets, Wellington Phoenix are favourites to take it off their hands at $3.75.
New boys Fury are not too far behind at $4 while Branko Culina's Jets are priced at $5.50 to retain the spoon, but a potential meltdown at Melbourne Victory sees $67 on offer for Merrick's men to finish bottom of the pile.
