Video footage of the incident appeared to show Muscat angrily pushing away the hand of assistant referee Michael Nugus after Nugus appeared to try to push Muscat down the tunnel at the break as the Victory skipper argued with match officials.

Muscat had been angry at several decisions that went against Victory during the first half of the team's 3-1 loss to Perth, especially when keeper Michael Theoklitos was flattened during a set piece but did not receive a free kick.

Under FFA rules the team's captain is allowed to query decisions with match officials and Melbourne insist that's all the skipper was doing when the assistant referee inflamed the situation.

Victory are angry at suggestions the incident is comparable to Central Coast Mariners' keeper Danny Vukovic's clash with referee Mark Shield at the end of last year's grand final when he copped a 15-month suspension - of which he served nine - for deliberately striking the hand of Shield after Vukovic was frustrated by Shield's decision to turn down a penalty late in the game.

Melbourne Victory communications manager Trent Jacobs told Sportal on Monday the club would co-operate with FFA as it reviews the incident as part of its normal Monday video review of all weekend matches but the club clearly does not expect Muscat to face any charges.

"The club is 100 percent supportive of Kevin," Jacobs told Sportal. "He approached the referee which he is allowed to do and indeed encouraged to do under FFA rules.

"We have no issues with the manner in which he presented himself and we will go through this incident with the FFA."

"There has some innuendo in the media that this incident is similar to the Vukovic incident but we are encouraging the media to look at the video footage."

Tonight the FFA confirmed theyw ould be taking no further action against Muscat.

A statement said: "FFA today advised there were no disciplinary incidents attracting sanction arising out of Round 14 of the Hyundai A-League.

"The incident involving Kevin Muscat and the assistant referee did not escape the attention of the referee and, therefore, was outside the jurisdiction of the independent Match Review Panel."

While Melbourne Victory were earlier reluctant to criticise the behaviour of the assistant referee who appeared to push Muscat, Victory coach Ernie Merrick was angry when asked about the incident.

"Kevin, as allowed by FFA, was having a discussion with the referee when the linesman pushed Kevin, which is totally out of order," he told Melbourne's Herald Sun newspaper.

"I've really got no other comment other than I hope people view the footage clearly."

Victory, which slipped to second place on the ladder as a result of their second successive loss on the road, now have this weekend off due to the re-scheduling of their home game against Adelaide to January 6 due to the Reds' participation in the FIFA World Club championships in Japan.

The club's next game is away to Newcastle on December 19 before rounding off their season with five matches at home in the last six rounds after Christmas.
