MELBOURNE Victory prepared for the AFC Champions League with a 3-1 win over Victorian Premier League side Whittlesea Zebras at Epping Stadium.
English forward Stefan Moore, who is currently on trial in Melbourne after stints with Aston Villa and Queens Park Rangers, netted two first half goals, while Matthew Kemp added Victory’s third on 60 minutes.
Victory stars Kevin Muscat, Archie Thompson, Danny Allsopp and new recruit Billy Celeski all featured in the trial match, allowing Victory Coach Ernie Merrick to rest a number of regulars.
"We still have several players rehabbing that we didn’t give a run to such as Grant Brebner, Nick Ward, Joseph Keenan, Steven Pace and Ljubo Milicevic," Merrick said.
"Everyone else got a run and after a bit of a scrappy first 10-15 minutes we settled down and played some good football."
Despite conceding a penalty on 17 minutes, Victory made the most of a flawless pitch and equalised soon after when Moore received a pass inside the penalty area and calmly slotted his first goal.
Victory dealt with the blustery conditions and claimed the lead on 39 minutes when Kemp delivered a cross from the left flank, finding Moore in a perfect position to double his tally.
Kemp put the result beyond doubt with a deflected shot as Victory coach Ernie Merrick made numerous changes, introducing a number of youngsters including Nathan Elasi, Sebastian Ryall and Evan Berger.
"It was good to see some of the younger players and new players fit in so quickly," Merrick said.
"Younger players such as Nathan Elasi and Evan Berger, who hasn’t had much of a run, and I thought Billy Celeski was very good in midfield."
Merrick added that while there is room for improvement, the side is still on track ahead of Victory’s debut appearance in Asia’s premier club competition.
"I’m happy that we had the hit out, but we have to step up from that the next time we have a practice game.
"The boys are fatigued; three of our days were double sessions, plus a heavy session yesterday, the game today and a weight training session tomorrow.
"The boys get the weekend off and next Monday we’ll be working pretty hard again."
