FFA are on the lookout for a new Socceroos boss after Holger Osieck was given the boot following consecutive 6-0 defeats at the hands of Brazil and France.

Victory are reluctant to let two-time championship winning coach go as he heads in to his second season at the helm of the club and helps builds a foundation for the future.

Postecoglou confirmed in a press conference on Thursday that the club “may have had some contact” from FFA.

But au.fourfourtwo.com understands the contact did not last more than a phone call with Victory denying the ruling body the chance to talk to the coach or his representatives.

Victory battled Crystal Palace in pre-season over the services of Mark Milligan and look to have an equally arduous challenge on their hands with Postecoglou and the FFA.

As the 48-year-old firms as the favourite to take over the reigns of the national team, Postecoglou did not rule out the possibility and claimed the opportunity would be a “great honour”.

“It would be a massive honour but as where I sit right now I’m coaching the Melbourne Victory and really looking forward to tomorrow night's game,” he said.

Postecoglou also acknowledged assistant Kevin Muscat as a possible replacement should he take up the Socceroos job.

“Kevin would be a number of many young coaches around the country who I think will eventually get that opportunity to coach (in the A-League)” he said.

“Kevin Muscat’s been an important part of what we’ve done here there’s no doubts about it.

“Anyone who knows the way I work I put a lot of responsibility on the people around me. The progress we’ve made in the last 18 months, he’s been a massive part of it.”
