Melbourne took an early lead thanks to Tom Pondeljak but a fortunate goal from Ko Ki-Gu just before half-time saw the teams shares the spoils in a result which all but secures Gamba Osaka's progress to the quarter finals.

Victory's night began very well with Pondeljak netting his first goal for his new club in just the fifth minute.

The move started with a long ball from Kevin Muscat which was headed back for the former Mariner to try his hand from outside the box. The shot was well taken, beating Jo Min Hyuk easily.

Rocked by the early concession of a goal, Chunnam fought back to dominate the first half. Michael Theoklitos was called on twice to preserve the lead.

The first one stemmed from an error from Muscat in the 19th minute and ended with Ju Kwang-youn turning and shooting only for the Melbourne keeper to knock it away.

Soon after Chunnam broke down the left and the ball fell to Victor Simoes who only made poor contact and hit it straight at Theoklitos.

But the Melbourne keeper was culpable in the equaliser on 38 minutes when Ko Ki-Gu hit a speculative shot from out on the left and found Theoklitos off his line and unable to stop the ball going in to the net.

Within minutes, Melbourne could have been ahead again but Sebastian Ryall could not get his foot on the end of Billy Celeski's deflected free kick. A flowing half ended 1-1, but not before Simoes tested out the Melbourne custodian one more time with a well-struck shot.

Chunnam didn't take long to resume its quest for the lead and a great through pass from Ju Kwang-youn gave Yoo Hong-Youl an excellent chance but Theoklitos tipped it over.

Up the other end, Jo Min Hyuk looked intent on handing the visitors the advantage, charging off his line and allowing Nathan Elasi to square the ball to Danny Allsopp who had his first shot cleared by Park Ji-Yong, while his second shot went wide.

The open nature of the game saw chances flow thick and fast with Elasi denied by Jo and then Yoo thwarted by some desperate Melbourne defence either side of the hour mark.

Melbourne brought Adrian Caceres and Carlos Hernandez into the game in search of a winner but instead it was Lee Sang Yong who should have scored, hitting the side netting from close range in the final ten minutes. Allsopp had one last chance, heading over the bar from Hernandez's cross in injury time.
