MELBOURNE Victory have rejected Borussia Dortmund's bid to buy young goalkeeper Mitch Langerak and denied the 21-year-old a dream move to one of the world's most prestigious leagues.
Football operations manager Gary Cole confirmed today that Dortmund - the first German club ever to win a European trophy and winners of the European Champions League in 1997 - had been in discussions with Victory about trying to secure Langerak.
"Melbourne Victory can confirm we received an offer from Borussia Dortmund for Mitchell Langerak but it was rejected," Cole said.
Langerak - who established himself as first choice keeper for the A-League runners-up this season - was keen to make the move and is shattered at Victory's decision.
When asked how Langerak had taken the club's decision; Cole replied: "Mitch is a young player and he is disappointed."
Cole would not go into details as to why Victory rejected Dortmund's offer and said the ball was now in the German club's court to make an improved offer if they wish to secure one of Australia's most promising young keepers.
Langerak began this season as Victory's second choice goalkeeper after the Melbourne club bought in New Zealand international Glen Moss to replace the experienced Michael Theoklitos, who left the club after the 2008/09 championship winning season to join English club Norwich City.
But Langerak replaced Moss in goal after the Victory's 4-0 home loss to Central Coast Mariners in early November.
And once Langerak, who prior to this season had only made a handful of appearances for the club after debuting in 2007, established himself as the club's first choice keeper, Victory's form improved as the 21-year-old kept clean sheets in four of his first five matches.
Langerak kept his place ahead of the more experienced Moss for the rest of the season and played in both the A-League Grand Final loss to Sydney - where he saved one penalty in the shoot-out - while he has starred during Melbourne's current Asian Champions' League campaign pulling off a string of magnificent saves in Victory's 1-0 win over Japanese side Kawasaki Frontale in their most recent ACL match.
The Queenslander will again be in goal on Wednesday night when Victory need to beat Chinese side Beijing Guoan at Etihad Stadium to keep their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages alive.
Melbourne Victory coach Ernie Merrick admitted today that Langerak's recent form would have caught the eye of talent scouts around the world.
"He has been outstanding Mitch Langerak," Merrick added.
"I have no doubt there are a few of our players (not only Langerak) catching the eye of other clubs."
