AURELIO Vidmar has challenged his players to string together back-to-back A-League victories as they prepare to welcome Wellington Phoenix to Hindmarsh Stadium.
Vidmar wants another three-point haul tomorrow night and he admits a failure to string two wins together so far this season has been costly.
The Reds are yet to string together two wins in a row this season, a significant factor in why United currently sit at the foot of the A-League table.
This inconsistency and failure to back up a win with maximum points the following week, saw Vidmar reshuffle his side last week against Brisbane Roar, the move paying dividends as United scored a confidence building 1-0 victory away from home.
That result has now given United an ideal chance to achieve back to back wins as they host a team they have yet to lose to.
But the Reds' home record has not been one to brag about this season with just three wins from 10 matches, giving Vidmar further interest on how his charges come out against Wellington at Hindmarsh.
"That (scoring back to back wins) is the big challenge. I think we've grown a fair bit of confidence and we can go into this game tomorrow night with a lot of confidence, so I'm really looking forward to seeing how we back up," Vidmar said.
"It (last week's result) was very good in terms of having a great winning mentality. Although in the last few minutes it was quite hairy, everyone really defended as a unit, and did everything they possibly could to take the three points so that was a great sign, there's a lot of confidence amongst the group so we're really looking forward to a great performance tomorrow night."
In the corresponding fixture last season, the Reds put six past Phoenix in a scintillating display. But the Reds are sure to run into stiffer resistance this time around, Wellington right in the mix of the top six, and aiming to make the finals for the first time.
"They (Wellington) have made massive improvements from the last couple of years, and they've got a lot of dangerous players right across the park and certainly we need to be up for a big game," Vidmar said.
"It's certainly going to be a challenge and as I mentioned, the challenge for us is to back up.
"We're not too bothered about what's happening on their side of the fence, we'll just worry about getting our game right and making sure we go in with a lot of aggression and a real positive frame of mind to try and pepper their goal and put them under pressure, and if we can get a goal early, hopefully that will set the tone for us."
United's main injury concern heading into the clash is midfielder Paul Reid, who is rated a fifty-fifty chance of overcoming a groin strain, while Fabian Barbiero and captain Travis Dodd are expected to be available despite having an easier week on the track.
Vidmar has not revealed what, if any, changes he will make to the line up from the one that defeated Roar, the Reds boss keeping his cards close to his chest, with the squad to have its final training session late on Thursday.
"It has been a crazy season. You look at the situation we're in and only four points from fifth spot, so there is still a lot to play for and it's a good opportunity for us to back up, get a win and then assess where we are after that," Vidmar added.
