Pre-season has seen a number of big names attracted into the A-League with the likes of Robbie Fowler, Jason Culina and Mile Sterjovski among those who will be lining up in the competition this season.

However, Vidmar is not convinced that all the pre-season spending by clubs has been especially wise.

United have not joined those clubs willing to pay mega-bucks although that isn't to say they haven't tried to tempt a big name to the club.

"Most A-League clubs are trying to find their feet still after four years and some of the money that's being thrown around is just ludicrous.

"We've tried to make some big plays for some big players, Aussie boys that are playing overseas and Aussie boys that are playing in the A-League currently.

"There's just not enough money for them. We think that we offered fair value for the player, that we had enough money for them  and they've decided to go elsewhere," Vidmar told the Adelaide Advertiser.

Adelaide face Perth Glory tonight in a pre-season clash at Hindmarsh Stadium.
