In the lead up, Reds coach Vidmar emphasised the need for his team to start hitting more shots on target, and the message must have got through as United fired nine shots on Perth's goal, but were left unrewarded despite their efforts.

"Velaphi was outstanding, that's why you've got a goalkeeper in the team," Vidmar said.

"It was very hard to take because we dominated the game and unfortunately the only area we didn't dominate was on the score sheet."

"Even last year we were wining games, we haven't played as well as we did tonight. Everyone was very good, the only thing we didn't do was score a goal and unfortunately the game can be very cruel."

"We've still to remain positive and if we keep playing that way, we'll win more games than we lose."
