Ognenovski snatched a point for the Reds in the final play of the game, the imposing defender rising high from a free kick to head the ball past stranded Jets keeper Ante Covic to get United out of jail after Matt Thompson had given the home side a 57th minute lead.

The goal was Ognenovski’s second in as many matches after he struck against Sydney FC last week, but it was his goal against Newcastle that had United coach Vidmar breathing a little easier after The Reds looked to be heading towards defeat.

He said: “I thought that the number of chances that we had, we should have had the three points but the front third just lacked a bit of cohesion.

“The longer the game goes on and you don’t take your chances, the harder it gets.”

The Reds were sending waves forward in a bid to draw level and just as it looked like they would not find a way through, Ognenovski provided the final second heroics to salvage a point in a thrilling climax as he sent his header into the back of the net past a devastated Newcastle defence.

In reflecting on the goal after the game, Ognenovski said, “The ball came across and I just attacked it. When I headed the ball Covic was in no man’s land and I think he might have slipped so I was fortunate enough that the ball went into the back of the net.”
