CANBERRA United’s dominance at the top of the Westfield W-League ladder continues unabated, with Round 4 also marked by a return to form for Sydney FC who gunned down the previously unbeaten Newcastle Jets.
Defeat for the Jets saw Canberra open up a five-point lead at the summit following a 2-1 win at home over Melbourne Victory.
Sydney showed ominous form to overpower the Jets 4-1 in Newcastle to leapfrog their opponents into second.
Brisbane Roar finally returned to the winners circle with a hard-fought 2-1 victory on the road against Adelaide United.
Canberra maintained their winning form in holding off a typically fierce challenge from Melbourne Victory to secure a fourth three-pointer from as many starts. The team from the nation’s capital are the league’s top goalscorers, and also have a share of the best defensive record in the league.
First-half goals from Ashleigh Sykes, her second in as many starts, as well American Taryn Hemmings proved too much for the visiting Victory. Kendall Fletcher pulled a goal back in the latter stages, but in a match in which numerous chances were created at either end, it was United’s finishing that proved decisive.
A tight contest was expected in Newcastle between the Jets and Sydney FC and so it proved during a scoreless first half. However, inspirational midfielder Kyle Ledbrook scored almost immediately after the second period commenced to open up the floodgates as a trio of Matildas stars - Thea Slatyer, Catlin Foord and Heather Garriock - put the game out of reach.
Tara Andrews grabbed a late consolation for a Jets side which had lost Lisa De Vanna during the half-time interval following a hefty collision with Sydney goalkeeper Allison Lipsher.
The Jets will have the chance to pull themselves back into title contention next week when they visit leaders Canberra in a match that is shaping as one of the highlights of the season.
Finally in Adelaide, champions Brisbane Roar were made to work overtime before subduing a resilient home side and claiming their first win in their third start.
Captain Clare Polkinghorne and Ashley Spina scored either side of the interval, however Marijana Rajcic’s goal set up a tense finale. The Lady Reds only narrowly failed to find an equaliser after some late pressure, but despite the loss the league’s bottom side will take confidence from their performance against the Westfield W-League heavyweights.
