The fledgling outfit were comfortably the better side as goals from Youssouf Hersi and Michael Beauchamp ensured they claimed their maiden derby triumph over the Sky Blues. The result also sent Wanderers up to fourth on the table.

“Certainly it's the biggest,” Popovic told Fox Sports. “We've had some great moments so far, there's many to name. But this is a special day.

“We square the ledger now, so it's a great day for our fans and our football club and we'll look forward to the third derby.”

Popovic was particularly delighted with his side's performance as they had the better of the contest, with Sydney barely able to register a shot on target.

“The attitude was outstanding. Not just the attitude but the performance man for man, even the subs, were terrific tonight. It was a thoroughly deserved victory,” said Popovic, a former Sydney FC player and assistant coach.

He added: “We wanted to move the ball quickly. The first 15 minutes is a typical derby. It's very fiery, the pace is frantic.

“We said when we get the opportunity we've got to play and try and move the ball quickly. If we managed to do that we had a good chance to win the game.”

The fledgling club, who are now fourth, have enjoyed a rapid rise since their creation barely six months ago and Popovic said they were in the midst of a great period of improvement on the field.

“The table is always a difficult one to assess. The performances are the key. Performance-wise we've been building, we've been improving,” he said.

“Game by game, we've had some disappointing results but we're showing improvements. It's becoming weekly now, we've been able to string some results together.”

Wanderers next assignment is at home to second-placed Adelaide United on Friday evening.
