As for tonight's game, Culina explained part of his game plan. “Our plan was to be patient. We knew they had a strong midfield but they are a bit vulnerable with balls played diagonally behind their defence. Nene we felt we could exploit in particular.

“Our best opportunities came when we played those diagonal balls behind them. We planned to draw their back three out and then play balls over them diagonally. But we didn't take our opportunities.

“Credit to Urawa Reds they made it hard for us to have some clear chances. As a coach I'm very proud of our players.”

Culina also paid tribute to the opposition. “Urawa is a wonderful, wonderful club. To come so close against one of the giants of Asian football makes us very proud."

Asked whether Urawa could win the J-League, Sydney FC coach Branko Culina said he'd love to coach the Japanese side to find out, which got a laugh from the large media contingent. “We could swap!” he added.

"When you have the crowd support it's absolutely brilliant. It's not just one of the best crowds in Asia, but it's one of the best in the world. They lifted our players but they also would've lifted the Reds. I'm very proud of my club and my players. This is our first time in the ACL but no excuses.”
