The 31-year-old import had a year left to run on his current deal but with his partner due to give birth in October, expressed a wish to return to Germany to provide physical and emotional support.

He said: “It’s important to me that I am supportive to my partner both during the lead up to the birth of our child and the period immediately afterwards.

“I am naturally disappointed to leave as I was hoping to force my way into the Queensland Roar team this season following a frustrating time with injuries last year.

“I’ve felt fitter and stronger during this pre-season but in life some things have to come before football. It is better for the team and better for me and my partner if I leave the club before the season gets any closer to starting.”

Roar coach Frank Farina understands the midfielder’s reasons for seeking an Australian exit.

He said: “Marcus is a good player and a nice guy. I fully understand his reasons for wanting to be with his partner as they enjoy the birth of their first child and this is an important time for any new family.

“We wish him all the very best for the future and hope he enjoyed his time here. He will be the first to admit that last season didn’t go well for him, but he was looking very sharp at training recently and was determined to have a good year.

“I’m sure he will find a new club in Germany and he leaves with our very best wishes.”
