More than 130 young football players will meet at Wesley College and Penrhos College on Monday for the annual Western QBE Country Camp.
The week-long camp is an opportunity for young regional footballers to develop their skills and knowledge of the world game. Players will be identified to attend Regional District Academies and potentially selected for the National Youth Championships.
Boys aged 12-16 and girls aged 12-17 will participate in the camp with teams attending from the following associations:
- Albany
- Goldfields
- Geraldton
- Leeuwin-Naturaliste
- Karratha and Districts
- Country Coastal
- Collie
Football West Development Manager Andrew Bettell said the camp was a great success last year and is made possible by sponsors including Western QBE and Healthway's Smarter than Smoking campaign.
"130 of the top 12 to 17 year old junior country players, male and female, have the chance to develop their game, learn from some of the best in the business and potentially go on to represent the state,” he said.
The added bonus for this year’s Goalkeepers Camp is that selected sessions will be taken by Olyroos and Socceroos goalkeeping coach Tony Franken. Franken is a former Socceroo and is one of the competitions longest serving keepers.
Current Perth Glory players including Jamie Harnwell, David Micevski, Tommi Tommich and Anthony Danze will make star appearances in Thursdays afternoon’s skills sessions from 2.15pm to 5.45pm.
