Arsenal thrashed by Liverpool at Anfield

New season, same old problems for Arsenal.

Year after year, a lack of steel and solidity seems to cost the Gunners in big games, and it was no different at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool were majestic as they fired four past their bewildered opponents in a one-sided affair.

Goals from Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and substitute Daniel Sturridge reflected Liverpool’s dominance, after a performance full of endeavour and pace.

In contrast, Arsenal’s big names failed to perform, after Alexis Sanchez was substituted after an hour while Mesut Ozil was anonymous throughout the afternoon.

The result moves Liverpool up to second in the Premier League, after taking seven points from their opening three league fixtures.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are seemingly back to square one following back-to-back defeats.

Wembley hoodoo still hangs over Tottenham

Mauricio Pochettino’s men were just one minute away from chalking up their first league win on the hallowed Wembley turf, only to suffer a last-gasp sukerpunch against Burnley.

Spurs, who are playing their home games at the national stadium this season, had won just two of their 11 games at the 90,000 seater ground before the match against the Clarets.

However, after taking the lead though Dele Alli’s composed finish, the men in white appeared set to silence their Wembley doubters.

That was until a dramatic equaliser from Burnley new boy Chris Wood, who stroked the ball past goalkeeper Hugo Lloris in the second minute of injury time.

Spurs had created opportunities to put the game beyond doubt, with the best chances falling to Harry Kane.

After the game Pochettino couldn’t hide his frustration, rueing his side’s “lack of concentration” in the closing stages.

Mbappe poised for PSG move

The french giants appear set to land their second marquee signing of the summer, with 18-year-old Kylian Mbappe ready to move from Monaco on a season-long loan.

Reports from France suggest that PSG, who bought Neymar for a record fee of £198 million earlier this month, will have an option to buy Mbappe at the end of the season.

Real Madrid were also reported to be interested in the teenager, yet the French forward seems keen to stay in his home country.

Mbappe was an unused substitute in Monaco’s 6-1 win over Marseille on Sunday.

Last season Mbappe scored 15 goals and provided 11 assists in Ligue 1.

Madrid held at home by Valencia

The defending La Liga champions dropped their first points of the season after an enthralling 2-2 with Valencia.

Marco Asensio continued his impressive start to the season with a fine strike to open the scoring in the tenth minute.

Yet, Valencia, under their new manager Marcelino García Toral, fought back in an end-to-end contest, drawing level though Carlos Soler’s close range finish.

With 14 minutes to go, Geoffrey Kondogbia gave the visitors a shock lead before Asensio added his second with a stunning free-kick.

Karim Benzema had opportunities to win the game for Madrid late on, however the striker flashed an effort wide before drawing a spectacular save from Valencia keeper Neto.
