City beaten, Sanchez on the move? And a Barcelona comeback. It's been an eventful few hours in Europe.
Not Invincible
Manchester City’s unbeaten run is over. They won’t be remembered as invisibles like the Arsenal team of 2004, but what a run it was and what a match to finally end it.
After 22 Premier League games without defeat, Pep Guardiola’s side finally came unstuck in a pulsating encounter at Anfield, where Liverpool boosted their Champions League hopes with a thrilling 4-3 victory.
Jurgen Klopp's men hassled and harried City from the offset and despite missing Phillipe Coutinho, who was sold to Barcelona for a reported £146 million, Liverpool’s front three of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah caused chaos in the visitor’s backline.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain opened the scoring in the 9th minute with a skimming strike but, for all their endeavour and zest, the Reds were pegged back five minutes before half-time courtesy of Leroy Sane’s equaliser.
However, just when City appeared to be taking control, the Premier League leaders fell apart, as Liverpool’s dynamic forward trio - Firmino, Mane and Salah - made it 4-1 in a frantic nine-minute spell.
The game wasn’t done there, as goals from Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan reduced the deficit.
Sergio Aguero almost headed home a dramatic equaliser in stoppage time, but the Reds held on by the skin of their teeth.
Sanchez on the move?
Arsenal’s season is fading fast and it could be about to get even worse for the Gunners, who look set to lose their star player before the end of the January transfer window.
Alexis Sanchez wasn’t even in the squad for their 2-1 defeat away at Bournemouth, amid speculation of a move away.
Manchester City looked the most likely destination for the Chilean international at the start of the month, however a dramatic turn of events could see Sanchez make a switch to Manchester United instead.
One thing that is for certain, Arsenal will desperately miss their talisman who has been their prized asset ever since his arrival in 2014.
Mesut Ozil was also absent at the Vitality Stadium due to a knee injury and without their key men, Arsenal lacked the attacking flair and creativity that they have become renowned for under Arsene Wenger.
Despite taking the lead though Hector Bellerin in the second half, Arsenal surrendered it quickly as goals from Callum Wilson and Jordon Ibe gave Eddie Howe's side their first ever Premier League win over the Gunners.
Suarez Inspires Barca Comeback
Following Manchester City’s defeat at Anfield, Barcelona are now the only unbeaten team in Europe’s top five leagues.
They almost surrendered that title, though, after falling 2-0 behind away at Real Sociedad, however Ernesto Valverde’s side battled back to record a stunning 4-2 victory.
Barca hadn’t won at Anoeta for 11 years and that looked set to continue following first-half goals from Willian Jose and Juanmi inside 34 minutes.
The visitors, who were without new signing, Philippe Coutinho, pulled one back before the break through Paulinho before a Luiz Suarez brace completed the turnaround.
Lionel Messi added a fourth from a free-kick five minutes from time, as Barca restored their nine-point lead at the top of La Liga.
