Socceroos legends Mark Schwarzer and Stan Lazaridis believe new boss Bert van Marwijk can deliver for Australia at the 2018 World Cup.
Schwarzer and Lazaridis were among a panel of experts who advised the FFA on the appointment of van Marwijk to the role of Socceroos head coach for next month’s tournament.
Schwarzer has experience with Dutch coaches at a World Cup, first at Germany 2006 when Gus Hiddink took Australia to the Round of 16 and Pim Verbeek, who exited at the group stage in South Africa in 2010.
With the Socceroos facing France, Peru and Denmark in their group, Schwarzer believes Australia can do well with another Dutchman at the helm in Russia.
“You know what? I’m quietly confident,” Schwarzer told FourFourTwo.
“First and foremost, we’ve made a very, very good appointment in van Marwijk.
“He is somebody who has enormous experience at the World Cup taking Holland to a World Cup final which was an amazing accomplishment.
“Yes he’s had limited time to work with the side, but the time that he’s going to have leading up to the tournament is going to be invaluable to him.”
Even though the Socceroos will only have a few months to learn van Marwijk's methods, Schwarzer said the players will be hungry and determined to take everything on board.
“I remember in 2005 when Gus Hiddink was appointed, I was like a sponge,” he said.
“You do whatever you have to do. You’ll run through a brick wall, you’ll climb whatever mountain he wants you to climb and I’ve got no doubt the boys will be exactly the same.
“With the new manager they’ll also have more opportunities. It moves the goal posts for everybody. It keeps everyone on their toes and that can be healthy
“I’ve got every confidence that the connection will be made and that the guys will find a rhythm and the manger will get his instructions across and the team will adapt to it very, very quickly and I’m sure at the World Cup they will deliver.”
Lazaridis was also mentored by Hiddink in Germany and believes the Socceroos can find success under van Marwijk.
“With the games that we’ve got against Peru and Denmark they are matches that you look at and that you can realistically think you are going to get points,” he said speaking to FourFourTwo
“Van Marwijk has coached in Asia so he’s got to understand the Australian players and the way we play so he has already had a lead in to making his job a lot easier.
“He speaks English and the structure is very similar to the way he wants to play football.
“It’s not like it’s a holiday. He will want to prove himself on the big stage again, it could be a stepping stone for him for another job as well, if he does well.
“When you put all that together it’s great for us, he’s going to the World Cup to prove something and obviously he wants to show the rest of the world that he is serious about coaching Australia.”
