SHANE Stefanutto's World Cup hopes are in tatters with North Queensland Fury today confirming the defender will miss the rest of the club's A-League season with a serious knee injury.
Stefanutto suffered the knee injury in the 31st minute of the 1-1 draw with Perth Glory at ME Bank Stadium.
Fury coach Ian Ferguson said he was bitterly disappointed for the Qantas Socceroos left back.
"He's been one of our better players and now he's out for the season," Ferguson said. "There didn't look to be much in the challenge and the next thing he's being stretchered off.
"I thought he'd rolled his ankle, it's a terrible blow for the club and for Shane."
"That's his World Cup aspirations gone."
The club's medical staff will seek advice from a surgeon later in the week, but Stefanutto's injury comes as another blow to the Fury.
Ferguson has had to make changes almost weekly to his back four.
The club lost Scott Wilson and Jacob Timpano in the pre-season and Wilson only came back in time to replace Karl Dodd who went down in Round 7 against Wellington and will be out for another five weeks.
"We'll have to reshuffle the team and look at what we can do for next week," Ferguson said.
"Unfortunately these injuries happen in football and hopefully it won't be too bad for Shane."
Despite the send-off and a serious injury to left back Stefanutto, coach Ian Ferguson was delighted with the point away from home.
"The boys were determined and committed and they dug deep," Ferguson said.
"We are playing good football and it shows when we can go to Wellington and get a point and to Perth and get a point against the odds. They're the two hardest trips in the A-League and we came back from 1-0 down in both of them.
"This team has played well for the past eight weeks and it was heartening to see the boys take it to Perth with 10 men to get the draw."
In the closing stages Ferguson decided captain Robbie Fowler had done enough for the afternoon and brought on fresh legs in Dutchman Dyron Daal.
"It had been a long shift for him with the 10 men," Ferguson added.
"We needed to keep on the attack and control the ball and we did that."
