BOBBY Zamora continued his hot run of form as Fulham defied plunging temperatures in Switzerland to secure their place in the knockout stages of the Europa League at the expense of Group E opponents Basel.
Zamora capped a classic centre-forward's performance with two goals just before the interval.
The much-maligned striker has now scored four in his last three games and he led the powerful Basle defence a merry dance all evening, before being replaced to a standing ovation from the 1200 travelling Fulham supporters.
Zoltan Gera put Fulham 3-1 ahead with a neat side-footed finish after Basle had profited from a dubious penalty awarded against Chris Smalling.
Although Basle set up a nervous last few minutes with a late second, Fulham held out to join group winners Roma - plus the likes of Champions League losers Liverpool, Juventus and Atletico Madrid - in the last 32 of the competition.
Alessandro Cerci struck twice as Roma came away from CSKA Sofia with a 3-0 win, an outcome that means the Italians will be seeded in Friday's draw in Nyon.
Cerci, 22, put the Giallorossi ahead on the stroke of half-time before adding his second shortly after the re-start. Substitute Filippo Scardina made it 3-0 a minute from time.
Heerenveen were eliminated despite a thumping 5-0 home victory over Group D strugglers FK Ventspils.
Second-half goals from Mika Vayrynen, Viktor Elm, Gerald Sibon (two) and Darryl Janmaat won the game at a canter for the hosts, but it proved not to be enough as Hertha Berlin did the necessary against Sporting Lisbon.
Gojko Kacar's second-half goal was the only one in that match, as Hertha booked their ticket for the last 32 in nervy fashion.
Sporting were already assured top spot coming into the game and kept the German side waiting 70 minutes for the decisive goal.
In Group F, Djibril Cisse struck a late double as Panathinaikos progressed thanks to a straightforward home victory over Dinamo Bucharest.
Ante Rukavina set the Greens on their way with an opportunistic 55th-minute strike before Cisse netted twice in the last 10 minutes to secure all three points for new Greens coach Nikos Nioplias.
Sturm Graz finished their woeful European campaign on a high with a 1-0 triumph over group winners Galatasaray, Daniel Beichler scoring the winner.

Dame N'Doye scored twice as FC Copenhagen progressed in second from Group K with a 3-0 win over Sparta Prague.
Jesper Gronkjaer struck a third from the penalty spot after 54 minutes, while Sparta's night got even worse when Manuel Pamic was dismissed for a second bookable offence.
PSV Eindhoven preserved their unbeaten record in the group stage with a workmanlike 2-0 win over CFR Cluj.
A Danko Lazovic penalty and a second from substitute Nordin Amrabat was good enough to seal the three points for PSV, who were already assured of top spot.
Last season's UEFA Cup finalists Werder Bremen swept aside Athletic Bilbao with a stunning first-half display to secure top spot in Group L.
Both sides were already in the next stage and were fighting for supremacy.
Werder made light work of the task, though, Claudio Pizarro, Naldo and Markus Rosenberg netting inside 36 minutes as the Germans eased to a 3-0 victory.
Both Nacional and Austria Vienna could not qualify but the former went out on a high with a 5-1 win.
Ruben Micael (two), Mateus, Zarko Tomasevic and Felipe Lopes all scored after Schumacher had put the Austrians ahead.
In Group J, Ivan Perisic rubber-stamped Club Brugge's place in the last 32 with the only goal against Toulouse, with a draw enough to see the Belgians through.
Shakhtar Donetsk suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Partizan Belgrade, who salvaged some pride after a dismal campaign.
Last year's UEFA Cup winners were assured of top spot but, despite fielding a strong team, were undone by Lamine Diarra's early goal.
