Former Socceroos striker David Zdrilic is the front runner to succeed Alen Stajcic at Perth Glory, in what would be his first senior full time coaching role.
With Stajcic on the outer in the west after a torrid season, on and off the field, saw Glory pick up the wooden spoon, the club’s new ownership team view Sydney FC assistant Zdrilic as the man to spearhead their revival in 2024-2025.
Unable to replenish his squad during Glory’s protracted quest for financial salvation, which finally arrived in the form of property magnate Ross Pelligra, Stajcic has been a victim of circumstance, his fate all but sealed by resounding end of season losses to Melbourne City (8-0) and Sydney FC (7-1).
All of which paves the way for Zdrilic, who helped transform the fortunes of Sydney FC last season working alongside head coach Ufuk Talay, to take the baton.
Previously amongst those in the conversation to replace Tony Popovic at Melbourne Victory should he depart in the off-season, Zdrilic looks more likely to head west and link with former Soccerooos teammate turned Glory football director Stan Lazaridis.
Zdrilic returned home last August to ride shot gun with Talay after building an impressive overseas resume alongside the likes of Ralf Rangnick at RB Zeipzig, as well as assistant roles at Chicago Fire in MLS, KV Oostende in Belgium’s top flight and Serie A outfit Genoa.
His overseas adventures were hamstrung by UEFA’s refusal to recognise his AFC licence, leading to several hurdles and hiccups in terms of accreditation for his various positions.
Zdrilic, who is studying for his pro licence, is a disciple of the pressing game which helped transform the Sky Blues fortunes in his combo with Talay.
FTBL contacted Lazaridis for comment.
