In preparation for Saturday’s semi-final against Melbourne Victory, Sydney FC star left-back Michael Zullo says the Sky Blues have taken the word 'lose' out of their vocabulary.
While Sydney don’t want to be associated with the 'L' word, for Melbourne Victory it’s a term they have become accustomed to, particularly in the past two seasons of Big Blues.
Victory’s last win against the Sky Blues was on Australia Day 2016, but since then Sydney have beaten their interstate rivals seven times in a row including last season's Grand Final.
Zullo told FourFourTwo that Sydney FC will be taking their dominant record in Big Blues into Saturday’s semi-final and won’t be entertaining any thoughts besides victory.
“Losing is a word that has been completely taken out of our vocabulary,” he said.
“It’s not something we think about. We are the Premiers. We are going into this game feeling super confident. We have prepared fantastically and the whole team is feeling great.
“It gives us a huge amount of confidence personally going into a game knowing that you have been successful, especially in a final series.
“We’ve won a lot of times against Melbourne in the last two years and that is something we are going to channel into this weekend.”
While striker Bobo and attacking midfielder Adrian Mierzejewski have had outstanding seasons, Zullo’s contribution cannot be ignored after ending equal second on the assist list with nine.
The one-time Socceroo said his form is down to being given a greater licence to attack by Sydney coach Graham Arnold and he plans to continue that on Saturday night.
“With Rhyan Grant being injured this year the onus fell on me to get forward and replace the energy that he brings to us,” he said.
“That is something that I’ve really enjoyed. I like playing that way and getting as far forward as possible.
“It’s not foreign to me because that’s the way I’ve always played in my professional career and I’m really happy with my stats and how they’ve gone so far, and I want to add to them in the next couple of games.”
With Arnold departing at season’s end to take on the Socceroos role, Zullo said he plans to give his outgoing boss a winning send off.
“We haven’t spoken about it but from a personal point of view I’d like to send him out the way that he deserves, he said.
“He’s given the club so much, he deserves nothing less than a perfect season and that’s what we want to give him.”
