How and why the Jets need to recruit:

1. The squad lacks depth.

Ryan Griffiths said after the game that we Jets fans should get behind the boys that are playing in the team now and not hold out for new recruits (like his brother!). We do Ryan, but if any of you should get injured or suspended, who fills in?

With Jason Culina gone, the planned fulcrum of attack has changed and the Jets will be relying on fall back options Marko Jesic and Ali Abbas to play in the hole, positions which are slightly out of position for them.

2. The defence will improve.

It has to. Contrary to what others have said, I thought new recruit Tiago Calvano looked composed on the ball and a classy player.

He was beaten for the first Heart goal but his partnership with Topor Stanley will improve with game time.

3. Labi should not start.

Labi's a great option when opposition defences are tiring, but is he the answer to the question "who should be the Jets central striker?" The Jets played a high pressing game on the weekend, one that tires both teams out, but particularly the forwards. The tactic was very successful too, with Heart's defence coughing up possession deep in their own territory resulting in a goal.

If Labi came on later in the game, his high energy levels would bolster the tiring legs of the starting players. Start Payne or Jesic in the centre. Or get Jeffers back.

4. Ryan Griffiths will be a Jets legend.

I think with his superb free kick, bullet like second strike, his deft touches and superb finishing throughout the game, he already is. Two goals in one game. If he can continue regularly like that, he'll be in the running for the Golden Boot, and there's no reason (barring injury) that he won't.

5. Ben Kennedy needs to up his game again.

There were some glaring errors in defence which the keeper might have mitigated by organising the defence better. It's a tough call, first game back, but he will need to take charge at the back. Also, Kennedy should have punched the ball away for the second goal, instead he let it through for Dugandzic who scored.

And Ben should know that he was a lucky boy for not having a penalty awarded against him for taking out Williams. He has done exactly the same thing in the past and has suffered for it. He just needs to stay big and on his feet in those split second moments.

6. The team showed very strong willpower.

This is a huge positive for a team who has just had their coach sacked and lost their marquee player. That the Jets were able to sneak a last-minute goal is testament to their spirit and it's something they'll need more of as the season progresses. Craig Deans must capitalise on the team's solidity as a unit and continue to push the team to attack until the final whistle blows. You have to wonder how much they miss Branko, given how they played.

7. The new kit is very sharp.

And there were some nice tifos from the squadron honouring old jerseys.

Conclusion: Jets sit at the top of the table. Wins early in the season are often more critical than we generally credit them. Early losses can come back to bite you as the season comes to an end.
