Japan were beaten 1-0 by Poland in their final Group H game at the World Cup in Volgograd on Thursday but still advanced to the knockout stage, knocking out Senegal because they received fewer yellow cards throughout the tournament.
Southampton defender Jan Bednarek broke the deadlock for Poland on the hour mark after volleying in Rafal Kurzawa's free-kick at the near post.
Poland had been eliminated from the tournament before the match after losing both their opening games.
