NOVOGORSK, June 2 (Sputnik) - Russia defender Igor Smolnikov said on Saturday he was hopeful that the team would achieve satisfactory results at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
"We will show what we can do at the World Cup and how we have prepared. I hope will achieve satisfactory results. We have some very talented young players and a good team. The World Cup will show everything," Smolnikov told journalists.
The 29-year-old also called on the Russian public to get behind their country, despite their recent 1-0 defeat to Austria in a friendly on May 30.
"We are grateful for their [fans'] support and we will be doing everything we can," he said.
Smolnikov was named in head coach Stanislav Cherchesov's preliminary World Cup squad in May. The player has made 26 appearances for Russia since making his international debut in 2013.
Russia will host its first World Cup from June 14 to July 15. The fixtures will be played at 12 stadiums across 11 cities.
The host nation will face Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Uruguay in Group A at the tournament.
