Glory have made no secret of their wish to sign Smeltz but one thing they cannot offer any time soon is ACL action.

United are within touching distance of securing their ACL spot however, should they see off Central Coast Mariners.

"We know Shane will make his decision at the end of the season," United CEO Clive Mensink told the Gold Coast Bulletin.

"But I'm sure that will be a big bonus for him to have that ability to play in Asia if we were to be successful."

Mensink also confirmed that the club was not ruling out the possibility of enticing back a number of exiting players on loan for the ACL, should the club secure a spot in the competition.

"I've mentioned that to the players and they are supportive of the idea but obviously it depends on the timing," he said. "We've flagged it with them but we have to get through this weekend first."
