PERTH Glory has finalised its playing squad for the 2011-12 A-League season with the signing of ex-Melbourne Victory and Gold Coast United man Steve Pantelidis.
Pantelidis, 28, is the 12th player to join Perth Glory this season and his arrival completes the club’s 23-man squad.
“To be honest the set up here is very good, obviously Melbourne Victory is very professional and has great facilities but I think Glory is excellent,” Pantelidis told the media on Friday.
“I think a lot of the players here have been given a great opportunity to perform week in and week out so I’m expecting a really good season this year.”
Perth coach Ian Ferguson said he was delighted to sign Pantelidis who can play a variety of roles.
“Pantelidis is a great signing because he can do three different positions, he can hold midfield, he can play centre-half and he can also play right full-back, so we’re lucky to have him,” Ferguson said.
“Pantelidis wears his heart on his sleeve, he’s an honest player. That’s what you want, you want competitiveness in there and that’s what he gives you. He’s done that throughout his career.
“I think people have unfairly judged him because of his bookings but he’s a far better player than people give him credit for.”
The 28-year-old who has played 105 A-League games, also set the record straight on his disciplinary record.
“As the gaffer said he’s not going to tolerate stupid yellow and red cards, so I’m in the same boat as everyone else. I like to get in and get the ball but I’m not going to do anything silly,” he said.
“I have a bit of experience, I’ve been in the A-League since its inception, so I’ve been here for seven years now and I have a lot of experience and hopefully can bring that to the team.
“The team is great. Watching the team against Adelaide last week, they were brilliant.
“So, it’s going to be tough, it’s a long season. I’m hoping to get a chance to play eventually, but I have to work myself in. I’ve only been here for two week so I don’t expect to be in the team straight away."
