It's fair to say there probably wasn't a single person outside of the Central Coast Mariners' boardroom who was expecting John Aloisi to sign for the Gosford outfit.

While we were questioning whether the wheels had fallen off their bandwagon as a result of injuries, the Mariners were planning the coup of the season by snatching the signature of the Socceroo legend.

It is an awesome boost for the A-League - and a huge statement of intent by the Mariners.

They've made their name by consistently boxing above their weight with a hard-working squad that's shied away from creating individual stars and preferring strong team performances instead.

As a result, although they've got the results and notched up impressive campaigns, they've rarely been shown the respect they deserve.

Aloisi's arrival will change all that. They are already the team to beat this season - but now that will be doubly so.

While everyone had been waiting for their fall from grace as if it were a given, the only pressure on the Mariners was the one they created for themselves.

This was best shown by this week's result.

Frankly, no-one would have been surprised if they'd gone down to Phoenix - they've got serious injury woes, their form has been off recently, Phoenix have been playing well and the Mariners were away from home.

However they grabbed three points with a late, late winner in a defiant show of never-say-die self-belief.

But once Aloisi joins the side, there will be huge expectations of success from outside the club as well.

They will be thrust into the same kind of spotlight Melbourne and Sydney endure/enjoy (delete accordingly, dependent on whether you're a club coach or a club CEO...).

The Mariners' win ensured they not only stayed top of the league, but actually pulled away, restoring the gap to three points after the Jets had narrowed it to just one last week.

It's the perfect launchpad for Aloisi's arrival - providing the introduction of a big-name star and the attendant media pressure doesn't destabilise the squad.

As we approach the halfway mark in the season, the rift between top and bottom finally started to appear.

The bottom three are caught in a no-man's land of impending despair, while Roar - although just off the pace - are resurgent with their young stars leading them out of trouble.

Phoenix have the talent to still save their season and make it into the finals (but it's hard to see at whose expense though). Perth are in actual danger of playing good football and pulling themselves at least off the bottom.

But Sydney? Eek. Fans were calling for Culina's head after another crowd-killing home defeat...but any new coach will be faced with the same problem of a frankly poor squad.

Sydney's squad - with a couple of exceptions - peaked in season one (or never developed from) two years ago and needed to be culled at the end of last season.

Instead, the wrong players were allowed to leave, the wrong players' contracts were renewed, not enough new and current talent was brought in, their leading star was sold for a pittance and the marquee was crocked in round two.

A new manager will not change those facts. It takes time to build a new squad that turn into winners.

It took Alex Ferguson four years after he joined Manchester United, the club Sydney have been (unfairly) compared with. Culina hasn't even been given four months in the A-League.

It's not looking good for Sydney this season but Culina needs to be judged in a year, not in a week.

Elsewhere Melbourne struggled in the second half against Perth but their opener from Carlos Hernandez will have given the club and fans a huge boost as El Zorro finally fired up and lived up to his potential.

And Jets continue to grind out results to stay second, even without any real input from their marquee signing. God help the rest of the A-League if Jardel were to get fit and find form...

Adelaide once again showed they have the quality in their Arsenal-style young 'uns, while Roar's young team continue to show the side's older more experienced veterans how it should be done.

It might be doom and gloom in Sydney but this weekend's thrillers proved the A-League is just getting better and better. Oh, and we actually got through a round without any silly red cards...well done, refs.

Frank Farina deserves some hard-to-come-by praise for standing by his youngsters at the expense of older, costlier stars and Kruse and Zullo are rewarding him richly, even if Zullo did give away the penalty.

But the Jets just keep on keeping on. They just won't be written off and manage to grind out results week after week, thanks in main to Joel Griffiths.

Just how good has Adelaide's youth policy been? How many cracking youngsters can one side boast? Sydney would have given their eye teeth for just one of their young sensations as Adelaide notched up their first ever win at Sydney Football Stadium.

Sydney lost and didn't deserve to win. Adelaide have laid the groundwork over the past couple of years that showed up Sydney as an old creaking side where many are now past their sell-by date.

Ahmad Elrich announced his arrival in the A-League with a scorching goal on his home debut that looked enough to give Phoenix a share of the points.

But the Mariners aren't top by rolling over and Petrovski added to Heffernan's strike with a last gasp goal to steal victory in another heartbreak for the Kiwis.

Like Phoenix, Glory are so close to playing good football now they deserve to be getting better results than they are but they desperately need another striker to back up Harnwell. The current crop so far just aren't up to it.

Meanwhile Victory shone in the first 45 with Hernandez delivering the goods at last but were on the back foot throughout the second stanza. They need more consistency to retain the championship but they are still right in the mix.
