ADELAIDE United will be hoping they avoid breaking another record in week 12 of the A-League when they face bogey side Melbourne Victory in their biggest challenge of the season.
The Reds’ horror run against Victory is well known, losing nine on the trot to their fierce rival, and another loss at Etihad Stadium on Friday night would see them set an unwanted Australian national league record of the most consecutive losses to the same opponent.
The Reds have recorded eight losses in 10 visits to the venue, including the 6-0 grand final drubbing in season two.
Second-placed Brisbane Roar visit a venue they dread but not a feared opponent in the first ever A-League double header at Sydney Football Stadium.
Roar have a decent record against the Sky Blues but not at the stadium, where they have never won and taken home just five points from eight trips.
Vitezslav Lavicka climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge on Thursday after his team beat Glory on Sunday for their first victory of the season and another win is likely to see them off the foot of the table.
The other half of the double header sees Perth Glory attempting to break a six-game losing run in their clash with Central Coast Mariners.
Glory have never won at Bluetongue Stadium and will be glad to escape Gosford to potentially give Jamie Harnwell a 100th A-League game to remember.
Gold Coast United travel to North Queensland Fury undefeated in seven games and still yet to be beaten on the road.
Fury were unhappy their mid-week game with Newcastle was postponed and will want to try and build on their win against Perth last time out.
Newcastle will host Melbourne Heart in Port Macquarie, after their home pitch at EnergyAustralia Stadium was deemed unplayable.
The Jets also travel, having had their home game against North Queensland in mid-week postponed for the same reason.
Heart only took a point from the Jets last time thanks to a freak own goal from Ben Kantarovski.
Red Alert
Adelaide have lost nine in a row to Melbourne Victory. A loss on Friday night would see them set a new Australian league record for most consecutive losses to the same opponent.
“Welcome Adelaide!”
Melbourne Victory have a fantastic record against the Reds – 13 wins, three draws and five losses. It’s even better at Etihad Stadium – eight wins, one draw and one loss.
Roar Silenced at Sydney Football Stadium
Brisbane have never won at the SFS, registering five draws and three losses in their eight visits
Glory, Glory for the Mariners
Central Coast have a fine record against Perth – nine wins from 15 meetings
On A Gold Roll
Gold Coast United are undefeated in seven games. If they avoid defeat against Fury, they will equal a club record of eight consecutive games undefeated.
On The Road
Adelaide and Gold Coast remain the only two teams to be unbeaten on the road this season.
Raising the bat…
Perth Glory’s Jamie Harnwell will play his 100th A-League game while Melbourne Heart captain Simon Colosimo will play his 200th Australian national league game.
