EXCLUSIVE: Betting agencies are reporting a surge in the A-League while interest from the terraces and TV ratings are also on the rise.
“We have seen a massive increase in turnover on the A-League this season compared to last, ranging from increases between 70 and 100 percent on certain markets,” sportsbet.com.au's Ben Hawes told au.fourfourtwo.com.
“That is huge growth. It really has captured the attention of the punters.”
Hawes pinpointed the growth as being in the “head-to-head” options.
“Punters have so far backed the Roar to go back-to-back and they are very popular in head-to-head betting,” he said.
Another agency TAB Sportsbet have also reported huge increases stating betting on the A-League is up 80 percent year on year as the competition captures the imagination of an increasing number of punters.
Victory talisman Harry Kewell continues to drive crowds across the league with Victory leading the way, and the Socceroo superstar is also exciting the punters, said Hawes.
“There has been a lot of talk and interest about when Harry will find the back of the net first. He is at $6.50 to break his duck this weekend against the Gold Coast," said Hawes.
“For the regular season, the punters are tipping him to finish somewhere between zero and four goals which is at $2.37.”
Meanwhile Sydney FC creator Nick Carle continues to firm with Sportsbet as A-League player of the year.
Hawes added: “Nicky continues to firm in Johnny Warren Medal betting, shortening into $8.50 after starting the season at $21, but Thomas Broich is still the clear favourite at $2.87.
“Harry is second favourite at $4.33 followed by Brett Emerton at $8."
Aside from betting, other indicators show a robust return for the code after last season’s woes following the failed World Cup bid, a disappointing World Cup and plunging A-League crowd figures.
"This season has currently seen a 47% increase in crowds across the league,” the FFA told au.fourfourtwo.com this week.
“We have had some fantastic weekends of football including the record breaking Week 3 crowds where over 87,000 fans came through the gates. Individually the crowd increase in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Central Coast and Newcastle are very promising with Adelaide, Wellington and Perth also continuing to produce strong crowd averages.”
Ratings on Fox Sports are believed to be up for the A-League while au.fourfourtwo.com did record numbers again in October - more than 200,000 people reading three million-plus pages of Australian football content.
