EXCLUSIVE: John Aloisi has never felt sharper and is confident an ankle injury won't scupper his chances of facing North Queensland Fury in Sydney FC's A-League opener.
Aloisi picked up a knock in the recent win over Newcastle Jets in Port Maquarie and then aggravated it in the trial game against Sydney Olympic.
After a few days rest, he resumed running and is expected to be back in full training with Vitezslav Lavicka's squad on Monday.
After a turbulent first season in Sydney FC colours, the marquee man is looking ahead confidently to his second campaign and desperately wants to be part of things from the off.
He doesn't expect the ankle niggle to delay his entry to the season and with a tough pre-season already under his belt he isn't worried that the few days rest have set him back at all.
"It happened in the Newcastle game when we played them up at Port Macquarie," he told au.fourfourtwo.com "I then played against Sydney Olympic and it didn't feel the best.
"I had a few days off but started running again this week and I hope to be back training with the team at the beginning of next week.
"It should be okay for the North Queensland game. It's important for me to play the first game but also make sure that everything's good."
Aloisi's delight at being part of a team that has enjoyed a 13 match unbeaten run in pre-season is matched by his personal happiness.
"It's been good because I've been able to train properly and for me that's been the most important thing," he said. '"Because we've had such a long pre-season I won't lose anything (with the ankle injury).
"The base is already there, my sharpness is getting really good, confidence is good and so I'm sure that will carry on into the season.
"I've been feeling very good physically. It's the best I've felt in four years because I haven't had a good pre-season for that long. It's been very enjoyable."
From a public relations point of view Aloisi admits club efforts to engage with the city of Sydney have also delighted him.
He added: "We've had a lot of good results, travelled all over Sydney and had great support. We really appreciate that and we want that to continue."
