EXCLUSIVE: Sydney FC are top of the pile as the A-League's 10 teams turn for home. Marquee striker John Aloisi gives au.fourfourtwo.com his midterm report and offers his thoughts on the campaign so far and what the future may hold.
We are around the halfway point of the A-League campaign John. How would you assess Sydney FC's first half, so to speak?
I think Sydney FC's first half of the season has been positive because we're top of the table and we've played some really good games. When we've gone a goal down we haven't been able to come back and get anything out of it. That's frustrating of course and something to put right but I think we're growing as a team week by week and we're improving.
And how about John Aloisi's first half of the season?
I was happy with the start I made (scoring twice in the opening round win over North Queensland Fury) but then disappointed I got injured in round four and tried to play on with it for a couple of weeks. I haven't started since round six and that's been frustrating. But it's always nice to be in a winning squad. Training is much more enjoyable. I'm just working hard to make sure that when I do get my opportunity I'm ready again.
You're having to be patient for that chance due to the form of Alex Brosque and Mark Bridge though?
It's a positive that the coach rewards players that are playing well. Both Bridgey and Brosquey have been doing that. But whether I'm playing one week or it's Bridgey or Brosquey, we all want each other to do well because we want to win football matches and win the title for Sydney FC. We all get on really well which helps as well.
During pre-season you tipped Alex Brosque to push for the Socceroos. You must have been pleased to see him called into the squad for the Oman game?
Yes, I was very happy for Brosquey. You could see it in training and in pre-season games. Alex has got so much potential, it's frightening. He's got a real chance now. If he can continue on playing the way he is playing, he may have a chance for the World Cup? Who knows from there? He should have high goals and he still has time to achieve them - whether overseas , the Socceroos whatever.
Talking of World Cup places, what are the chances of John Aloisi being on the plane to South Africa next year?
Look, I'm not thinking about that. I'm just working hard and making sure I do well for my club. In football you never know what's around the corner. That's all I'm focused on to be honest.
Your contract is up at the end of the season? Will you be a Sydney FC player next year?
For me it's too early to say what I want to do. I just want to concentrate week by week at the moment . At the moment I'm enjoying training, enjoying playing. It's about being happy and enjoying the journey. There are good times and some tough times. You learn from both.
