With the help of au.fourfourtwo.com, ex-coach Branko Culina brought the one-time Arsenal star to the A-League for a season-changing injection of class to the side that turned their fortunes around.

But the club was unable to reach a deal to keep the veteran goalscorer in the country and he returned to the UK for a spell with Motherwell.

But his stylish contribution to Newcastle's attack was hard to replace and the club have now arranged to bring him back Down Under for a second time to play the remainder of 2011/12 season, subject to a medical clearance.

The one year deal is under the club's salary cap and is not a marquee signing.

“It is great news for our 10,000 plus Members and our supporters that we have been able to agree to terms with Francis Jeffers,” van Egmond said.

“As part of our process we need Francis to first pass a medical when he arrives in Newcastle.

“There is no doubt a fit Francis Jeffers will strengthen our squad and also bring experience and class to the squad.”

Jeffers, who made his Premier League debut for Everton at 16 years of age in 1997, has enjoyed a decorated career in the UK where he has played for some of the games biggest teams including Arsenal, Everton, Blackburn Rovers and Glasgow Rangers.

More recently Jeffers enjoyed his time on a 10-match guest contract with the Jets during the 2010/11 season and today’s announcement makes for a happy return for the 30-year old.

“I really enjoyed my time with Newcastle when I was there last,” Jeffers said.

“I felt like I had enjoyed a great relationship with the fans and the people of Newcastle and I am looking forward to coming back and playing for them again.

“I wanted to stay longer last time but it wasn’t to be, but having recently reached an agreement with the club the opportunity to return is finally here.”

Jeffers will arrive in Australia on Friday but  will not be considered for selection this weekend.
