Hakansson previously played in over 70 games in the Dutch Eredivisie for SC Heerenveen, RBC Roosendaal and ADO Den Haag, as well as having spells in Sweden and his native Denmark. He has also played for Denmark at Under-19/20/21 levels before being selected in the Danish National Team in 2007.

But his time in Australia was punctuated by injuries and Hakansson appeared only 10 times in total for the Jets, starting in just five games all season. Both the club and the player came to a mutual decision to release the player so that he may return home to Europe.

"It is of course unfortunate that the situation did not work out for Jesper in Australia. The club and player had discussions and came to the mutual decision to part ways and he will return to Copenhagen today," Newcastle Jets Chief Executive Officer John Tsatsimas said.

"It goes without saying that our club wishes Jesper all the best in his endeavours when he returns to Europe, and hopefully he can have a good period of time without injuries so that he can return to playing and training regularly."
