The Dutch press say 35 year old defender Patrick Zwaanswijk is on his way to Gosford after Arnold snapped up the experienced veteran when Breda released him after five seasons at the Eredivisie side.

He has also had two seasons in Japan with J-League side Oita Trinita after six years with Utrecht where he scored 18 goals in 159 games. Last season he played 25 games and scored twice.

The 193cm centreback could fill the gap beside Chris Doig in Mariners' backline. He is said to have rejected a deal with Eredivisie rivals ADO Den Haag to move Down Under.

Earlier this month, Zwaanswijk admitted his future was unclear but he still had hopes to carry on playing.

After his last game for NAC against FC Twente, Zwaanswijk said: "I am busy and hope to clear up what's happening quickly for myself, my wife and children.

"I have enjoyed every minute. I'm still not finished with NAC Breda. It will always remain my club."

Arnold still has close links with his old club in Holland where he is still treated as a local hero for his goalscoring exploits for Breda in his playing heyday as a striker.
