The former Adelaide City and Newcastle striker scored for his side in last weekend’s narrow Scottish Cup semi-final defeat by Glasgow Rangers – the tie eventually settled by a penalty shoot-out - but it might not be enough to secure a new contract.

Knee injuries have restricted the 31-year-old’s opportunities since he joined the club from Scunthorpe United in May.

With the season all but over every minute he gets to play will be vital to make a positive impression.

He told The Dundee Courier: “I need to get a couple of matches under my belt and hopefully amass a few more goals.

“The injury has been a real pain. Every time I thought I was getting through it I just seemed to break down again.

“But the last injection seems to have taken, I’m getting better every day, so hopefully I can get through these two games then we’ll see what happens.

“I haven’t spoken to the gaffer yet about next season. We’ve decided to leave it till the end of the week to sit down and have a discussion but I really like it here."

His old club Newcastle are in the market for a striker but Gary van Egmond’s focus appears to be on mainland Europe with a number of targets pencilled in.

McBreen crashed in nine goals in 36 appearances for Newcastle and later rattled home 19 goals in 55 games for Falkirk. He also had a spell in Romanian football with Craiova.
