On a soaked surface the youngster struck early in the match to settle any nerves the Championship side may have had against Accrington Stanley.

Wesolowski was perfectly placed to fire home on four minutes after Bruno N’Gotty’s initial effort came back off the crossbar.

While Wesolowski netted the goal that mattered, Leicester were indebted to another Australian member of the starting XI, goalkeeper Paul Henderson.

He made a tremendous stop to prevent Stanley’s Rommy Boco levelling matters. And there was further drama for Henderson as he collided with teammate Darren Kenton with the latter stretchered off.

City boss Martin Allen was delighted with the respective contributions of his two Australian players.

He said: “On a very wet pitch against a very well-organised team with a good manager and a good bunch of players we matched them all over the pitch, played good quality possession football, created some good opportunities and scored a good goal through young Jim Wesolowski.

“Our goalkeeper made some great saves and we rode our luck slightly. I thought the attitude of the players was excellent.

“As a team they were committed, organised and worked hard for each other.
“Not one of our players shirked it or didn’t quite pull their weight. Sometimes players can try too hard and it can sometimes be detrimental to a good performance.”
