But it was better news on the domestic front with Tom Rogic, Nikita Rukavytsya, Mustafa Amini, Mark Milligan and Martin Boyle all starring for the respective clubs.

EUROPE 

In the UEFA Champions League Milos Degenek started and played 90 minutes as Crvena Zvezda were thrashed 6-1 by PSG at the Parc Des Princes. Trent Sainsbury and Aziz Behich were both unused subs as PSV were edged 2-1 by Inter Milan. 

In the UEFA Europe League Alex Gersbach played a full match for Rosenborg in their 3-1 loss at home to RassenBallsport Leipzig. Apostolos Giannou played played 89 minutes and got an assist for AEK Larnaca as they lost 4-2 to Bayer Leverkusen. Tom Rogic was absent from Celtic's squad that lost 3-1 to Red Bull Salzburg. Danny Vukovic kept a clean sheet on match day one but let in three in a 3-1 loss to Sarpsborg on match day two for KRC Genk.

In Armenia Paris Duffield was absent for Hamrun Spartans as they drew 0-0 with Silema Wanderers while Harry Ascroft was absent from Balzan FC as they lost 4-1 to Valletta. 

In Serbia Milos Degenek's Red Star Belgrade faced up against Dejan Pandurevic's FK Zemun. Degenek played a full match while Pandurevic was absent from FK Zemnu's squad as Red Star Belgrade won 2-1. Andrew Marveggio was a 93rd minute substitute in Macva Sabac's 2-0 win over Backa. 

In the Bundesliga Mat Leckie played 16 minutes off the bench in Hertha Berlin's bore draw against FSV Mainz. Brandon Borello remains sidelined for Freiburg as they lost 4-1 to Augsburg. Robbie Kruse started and played 88 minutes as VFL Bochum beat Arminia Bielefeld 1-0. Kwame Yeboah was absent from Fortuna Koln's squad that beat VFR Aalen 1-0. 

Christian Theoharous was absent from Borussia Mönchengladbach II's squad that drew 2-2 against Verd in the Regionalliga. Joshua Laws and Jamie Percevski were absent from Fortuna Dusseldorf II's squad that lost 2-1 to Rödinghausen. Julian Schwarzer was an unused substitute for Pipinsried 09 as they beat Rosenheim 2-0. Stefan Valentini was absent from TuS Erndtebruck's squad that defeated Paderborn 1-0. John Anton-Buceto is still recovering from injury as his Kaan-Marienborn beat Rot Weiß Oberhausen 3-2 away from home. George Timotheou was absent from Schalke II's squad that beat TSG Sprockhovel 3-0. 

In Greece Haris Stamboulidis was absent from Aris Thessa's 1-0 loss to Panionios for whom Peter Makrillos was also absent from the match day squad. 

In the Netherlands Trent Sainsbury made his starting debut in the Eredivisie for PSV and played a full game while Aziz Behich played 10 minutes off the bench in a 4-0 win over VVV-Venlo. Ajdin Hrustic played a full match in FC Gronigen's 1-0 loss to ADO Den Haag. Denis Genreau played a full match while Dean Bouzanis was an unused sub for PEC Zwolle in their 2-0 win over Excelsior. George Mells was absent from Fortuna Sittard's squad that drew 3-3 away to FC Emmen. 

Quivi Fowler played a full match for Jong Dordrecht as they drew 2-2 with Jong Feyenoord. John Iredale was absent from Jong Heerenveen's squad they beat Jong Zwolle 2-1. In Norway Alex Gersbach started and played 76 minutes as Rosenborg drew 1-1 with Sandejford. Luc Jeggo started and played 46 minutes for Floro SK as they beat Strommen 2-0. 

In Austria Jimmy Jeggo played a full match as Austria Wien lost 2-0 to Altach. Caleb Mikulic was absent from Austria Wien Youth's squad that lost 2-1 to WSG Wattens. James Holland played a full match for LASK Linz as they lost 1-0 to Wacker. 

In Denmark Awer Mabil played 79 minutes and got an assist as FC Midtjylland beat Vendsyssel FF 3-0. Mustafa Amini played a full match and got an assist as well for AGF's 2-2 draw away to Odense. 

In Israel Nikita Rukavytsya played 90 minutes in a 0-0 draw with Hapoel Be'er Sheeva. Later in the week the Socceroo played a full match and a key role in his sides goal in a 1-1 draw with Ra'anana. 

In Croatia Steven Lustica was an 89th minute substitute for as Inter Zapresic lost 2-1 to NK Lokomotiv Zagreb for whom Fran Karacic was absent. Mark Rizoski was absent from NK Lucko's squad that drew 0-0 with Hrvatski. Anthony Kalik started and played 90 minutes for NK Rudes as they lost 3-0 to Dinamo Zagreb. 

In Finland Jacob Esposito played 7 minutes off the bench for PS Kemi as they lost 2-0 to Inter Turku. Dylan Murnane was absent from IFK Mariehamn's squad that defeated FC Lahti 3-0. 

In the Czech Republic Golgol Mebrahtu played 83 minutes in a 4-1 win over Slavoj Polna in the Czech Cup competition. Later in the week Mebrahtu came off the bench for 14 minutes in a 1-0 loss to Sijma in the league. 

In Cyprus Apostolos Giannou played a full match for AEK Larnaca as they defeated Ermis 2-1. 

In Slovakia Aleksander Susnjar played a full match and kept a clean sheet in MSK Zilina's 2-0 win over Poulbrezova. 

In Slovenia Deni Juric started and played 56 minutes in NK Triglav's 2-0 loss to Aluminij. 

In Turkey Erdeniz Yildiz was absent from Göztepe U21's squad that lost 1-0 to Kasimpasa U21.

In the Premier League Aaron Mooy played a full match for Huddersfield as they stole two points from Burnley in a 1-1 draw at Turf Moor. Mat Ryan kept a clean sheet in Brighton's 1-0 win over West Ham. 

In the English Championship Mile Jedinak was absent from both Aston Villa's 3-3 draw with Preston North End and 2-1 loss to Millwall for whom James Meredith played a full match. Earlier in the week Meredith played 75 minutes in a 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest. Bailey Wright was absent from Bristol City's matches against Rotherham and Sheffield Wednesday. Ryan Williams completed 90 minutes against Bristol City in their 0-0 draw and another 90 minutes in their 3-1 loss to Birmingham City. Jackson Irvine was taken off after 28 minutes in their 1-0 loss to Leeds with a feared achilles injury. His injury was cleared quickly as he started and played 80 minutes in Hull's 1-0 loss to Sheffield United. Adam Federici was an unused sub for both Stoke City's 2-0 loss to Bolton Wanderers and 1-0 win over Norwich City. Massimo Luongo played full matches in QPR's 1-0 win over Reading and 1-1 draw with Derby County. 

In English League One Ryan McGowan played 90 minutes for Bradford City in their 1-0 win over AFC Wimbledon and backed it up with another full game in a 2-1 loss to Sunderland. Kenny Dougall completed 90 minutes in Barnsley's 1-1 draw with Plymouth Argyle and 4-0 victory over Peterborough United. Brad Inman started and played 76 minutes in a 0-0 draw with Bristol Rovers while he completed 90 minutes in a 2-2 draw with Blackpool. Cameron Burgess played full matches for Scunthorpe United in their 5-3 win over Charlton Athletic and 3-2 loss to Luton Town. 

In English League Two action Harry Kewell scored two wins in a week defeating former side Crawley Town 3-1 and Macclesfield 1-0. It's his third win in a row and his Notts County side are five matches unbeaten. Jordan Lyden was absent from Oldham Athletic's 0-0 draw with Mansfield and 3-1 loss to Carlisle United. 

In the English youth leagues Tyrese Francois played a full game for Fulham U23 as they defeated Birmingham City U23 2-1 for whom Cameron McGilp featured. Jasko Keranovic was an unused sub for West Brom U23 as they beat Stoke U23 3-2. Jacob Young played a full match for Sunderland U23 as they lost 1-0 to Aston Villa U23. Ben Folami was abset from Ipswich Town U23 as they beat put three goals past Colchester U23. 

Riley Warland played started and completed 90 minutes as Fulham U18 smashed Reading U18 7-0. 

In the Scottish Premiership Rogic put in a classy 69 minute shift, with two assists, as the Hoops demolished St Johstone 6-0 in the Scottish Premiership.

Hibernian's Jamie Maclaren was missing due to injury while Mark Milligan played a full match in their 6-0 mauling of Hamilton Academical. Socceroo in waiting Martin Boyle scored and played 75 minutes for Hibernian alongside Mark Milligan. Andy Rose started and played 73 minutes for Motherwell in their 1-1 draw with Livingtson. Ryan Edwards played a full game as St Mirren lost 4-1 to Aberdeen. Jesse Curran got 15 minutes off the bench for Dundee FC as they lost 2-1 to Kilmarnock. Ben Garuccio played 17 minutes off the bench while Oli Bozanic was an unused sub for Hearts as they lost 3-1 to a rampant Rangers.

In J-League action Mitchell Langerak was on the end of a 2-1 loss as Nagoya Grampus lost to FC Tokyo. Ange Postecoglou's Yokohama F Marinos jumped up to 10th place with a 2-1 win over fifth place Consadole Sapporo. Andrew Nabbout made his comeback from injury after the World Cup coming off the bench for 13 minutes in Urawa Reds 1-1 draw with Vegalta Sendai. Jason Geria played a full match for JEF United Chiba in the second division defeating Roasso Kumamoto 3-1. 

In the K-League Classic Dylan McGowan was an unused sub for Gangwon as they drew 1-1 with Pohang Steelers for whom Connor Chapman played 90 minutes. James Donachie was an unused sub as Jeonnam Dragons defeated FC Seoul 1-0. Aleksander Jovanovic completed 90 minutes for Jeju United as they defeated Gyeongnam 1-0. Kwabena Appiah-Kubi got 12 minutes off the bench for Incheon United as they were victorious 2-1 over Daegu FC. 

In Saudi Arabia Rhys Williams and Jack Duncan both completed 90 minutes as Al-Qadisiyah lost 1-0 to Al-Wehda. Brad Jones was in between the sticks for Al-Nassr as they defeated Al-Hazm 5-1. Mat Jurman played a full match for Al-Ittihad as they lost 2-0 to Al-Fateh. 

In the UAE Bernie Ibini played 23 minutes off the bench for Emirates Club as they lost 3-1 to Al-Wahda.
