Just as in their last semi-final success over Frankfurt in 1962 - which was followed up with a win in the final - Hans Meyer's side found the back of the net on four occasions. This time, unlike in the 4-2 win 45 years ago, there was no reply.

Marco Engelhardt opened the scoring after just three minutes with Ivan Saenko doubling the lead in the 25th minute.

Further goals from Tomas Galasek in the 54th minute and substitute Chhunly Pagenburg on the stroke of full-time put the Bavarians in the final, where they hope history will repeat itself next month.

Engelhardt got the game off to an excellent start when he struck home after Saenko's shot was saved by Oka Nikolov.

And that was only the beginning of a memorable night the like of which Nurnberg have not experienced for 40 years.

Man-of-the-match Saenko was the beneficiary of a good run forward by Andreas Wolf to beat Nikolov for the second after he beat the offside trap in the 25th minute.

Ioannis Amanitidis had the chance to bring Frankfurt back into the game on the half-hour mark, but he could not beat Rafael Schafer in a one-on-one situation.

Less than 10 minutes into the second period, Galasek sealed the win with a low free-kick from 25 yards which beat Nikolov at his near post.

Australian-raised Spiranovic replaced Socceroo World Cup defender Beauchamp for Nurnberg on the 69th minute.

And in a further boost for the Nurnberg fans, Marek Mintal made a long-awaited return from injury as a substitute three minutes from time.

And there was one more cheer for the home fans as Pagenburg added a fourth after reaching Markus Schroth's throughball and picking his spot in Nikolov's goal.
