Professional futsal player Daniel Cappellaro is hoping to use his big match experience when Australia competes at the Minifootball World Cup in Tunisia this week.
The second edition of the World Minifootball Federation World Cup will be played from Friday October 6 up until Monday the 15th in Tunisia.
Australia enters the tournament for the first time and is in Group A alongside the Czech Republic, France and Argentina, with a total of 24 teams competing.
Mini football is a combination of futsal and 11-a-side football and is mostly played outdoors on open grass or synthetic grass. Teams are six-a-side and the pitch size in Tunisia will be a minimum standard of 50 metres in length and 30 metres in width.
The Australian team is made up of a mixture of Futsalroos stars and NSW NPL 1 and NPL 2 players.
Cappellaro has represented the Australian Futsal Association team that played in the Pacific Cup that was held in San Francisco in 2012.
That same year Cappellaro’s likeness was used in the FIFA Street video game under the unlockable character known as D10.
Cappellaro is hoping to use his vast futsal global match experience to assist the Aussies against teams like the Czech Republic, who as current European Champions, are favourites for the tournament.
“From what I’ve seen from the previous Mini World Cup in the USA, it’s going to be an experience to remember as some of these games are played in-front of 10,000 people in the Mini Stadia” said Cappellaro.
“My game is based around tricks, skills and being good on the ball as well as having that good first touch and control, so I’m hoping I can offer that skillset to the side.
“Going on the ability that players like Shervin Adeli has shown, the level within our squad is definitely going to be very high so our chances will be quite good.
“I played against Shevvy (Adeli) at the No Turning Back Nike tournament and he’s a very strong player who holds the ball up well. He predominantly plays as a target man in futsal. He can pass, shoot, turn and he is very sharp and quick so it’s going to be great to play alongside him.”
Adeli plays for Bonnyrigg White Eagles in the NSW NPL 1 and is also a member of the Australian Futsalroos team that played at the 2016 FIFA Futsal World Cup that was held in Colombia.
With experience gained in playing against Brazil, Ukraine and Mozambique, the 25 year-old belivess he can assist the Aussies in Tunisia.
“I’m very excited,” he said. “I’m hoping that I can relate the experience that I had in the World Cup last year and carry that across as it will help with things like pre-game preparation and in game situations such as when we are behind or winning and knowing whether to defend or attack.
“We look to be entertaining in our style so fans should definitely be watching as we are going to try and play that way in Tunisia.
