EXCLUSIVE: Robbie Fowler has been confirmed for Perth Glory’s glamour pre-season clash with Celtic in July – but the game is not a farewell match for the Liverpool legend.
au.fourfourtwo.com can confirm the superstar striker has agreed to turn out for clash at NIB Stadium on Saturday July 9 (kick-off 5pm) at the request of Glory owner Tony Sage.
Sage was desperate to have Fowler turn out one final time for the club he joined last season.
However, the club are keen to stress the game is not a farewell match but a chance for the star man to play one last time for a club he’s formed a strong bond with, courtesy of Sage.
Sage recently spoke of his admiration for Fowler who is said to have rung him personally to explain his decision to remain in England to further his coaching credentials rather than turn out for the WA A-League club next season.
Fowler hit the Internet earlier this week to stress that he didn’t need a farewell game for a club he’d only played one season for in the A-League. He simply wanted the chance for a last game with Glory if he was asked.
It appears that invitation has been proffered and the great man has accepted.
"For me it's a chance to get back to Perth to say my goodbyes to the staff and players of Perth Glory who made me feel welcome right from day one and whom I have a lot of time for and hopefully they do of me,” Fowler wrote earlier this week.
He added: "Regardless of what a few people may think, I really enjoyed my time in Perth and Australia and have made friends that I'll have for life.
"Nothing further to add only hope you all get right behind the chairman, the manager and the team and hopefully come the end of the season you will once again be crowned champions.”
Fowler’s appearance will put the gloss on what is looming as a big tour by Celtic – one of the best supported foreign teams in Australia.
