David Beckham's competitive debut for the Los Angeles Galaxy yesterday drew a record 1.5million television viewers for an MLS game, according to ESPN.
The Galaxy lost 1-0 to DC United, with the former England captain coming on as a 72nd-minute substitute.
ESPN News said today that the figures outstripped the previous record - 1,092,000 saw DC United v San Jose in 1996.
The 32-year-old Beckham had missed four Galaxy games with an ankle injury.
A sell-out crowd of 46,686 saw Beckham make some precision passes, although he was unable to change the course of the game.
